It is hard to believe that such a character as Mr Bean has found such a huge following. Since 2002 no longer has the Austrian Schilling been considered legal tender in this country after it was decided that Austria would instead convert to the Euro.

The Schilling actually replaced the Austro Hungarian Kronen in December 1924 and at the time 1 Austrian Schilling was worth 10,000 Krone. Although this currency was established on the 20th December 1924 the first ones were not in fact issued until 1st March 1925.

Then in 1938 the Schilling was abolished in favour of the German Reichsmark and at the time for each 3 Austrian Schillings you would get 2 German Reichsmarks.

But at the end of the Second World War the Austrian Schilling was once again introduced and remained legal tender until 2002. However actual circulation of this particular form of currency ended in 1999.

It was the Allied Military (English, American and French Forces) that helped to reintroduce the Schilling in 1945 and they first issued only paper money. At this time it was available in denominations of between 50 Groschen and 100 Austrian Schilling. For each Reichsmark that people exchanged for this currency they were valued at 1:1. However each person was only allowed to receive a total of 150 Schillings.

The actual issuing of coins didn’t take place until 1946 and then in 1947 a new set of bank notes were issued. Again people were entitled to exchange the old Austrian Schilling notes for the new ones however the rate was much more different at this time. For each new 1 Schilling note a person would need to hand over 3 of the old ones.
